Musical mythbuster heads downunder

Posted in Blog    //    Post Date - December 29, 2015
Duncan Lorien

Duncan Lorien

Every musician knows it. That feeling they’ve got great big holes in their musical understanding you could drive a truck through. Or the feeling they’ve hit a plateau and just can’t get any better, no matter how much they practice. Or that other feeling that they’re not a real musician because they can’t read music.

These feelings are especially true for self-taught musicians or those who just “play by ear”. The feeling that a lack of formal musical training is holding them back is not uncommon amongst musicians, particularly the “Weekend Warrior” who says they just want to gig with friends, but inside still dreams of being a better musician.

So it’s not surprising that when musicians take a 3 day intensive weekend seminar, called The Understanding of Music Seminar, things change.

Duncan Lorien, creator and presenter of the Understanding Music Seminar says he knows this well. He’s a highly successful musician himself, with two No. 1 albums in the UK charts to his credit. But these days he travels the world, delivering his weekend seminar.

Respected Australian guitarist Phil Ceberano did it and said it had simply “blown his mind”. Other musicians say things like “I learnt more about music in 3 days than I’ve learnt from 45 years of playing it.”

Billy Shanley, guitarist with the Mary Black band “highly recommends it”, Scott Fletcher, another guitarist said the seminar “gave me my life back” and Magic Dick from the J Geils Band said “anyone seriously interested in playing should take this seminar”.

Even those in the traditional music system say amazing things about the seminar, such as Carlos Campos, an Instructor at Berklee College of Music who said when he did the seminar – “Great seminar! I would recommend this course to every student.”

So what is the Understanding of Music Seminar? It’s a 3 day intensive course that covers all key areas of music. All musical theory is covered, but in a way that is simple and understandable. There is a whole section on improvisation that is quite revolutionary. And a mind-blowing “alternative history” of Western music that many describe as being “worth the price of admission alone”. The final day covers the big issue for a lot of musicians, reading music. Not just for keyboard but also guitar, so that guitar players can move on from the restrictions of tablature. It’s not surprising the seminar is unofficially known as the “Music Rebels Music Seminar” amongst musicians.

If this all sounds too good to be true, here’s what Rob Gennari, who was voted Australia’s No. 1 Up & Coming Rock Drummer, had to say about the seminar. “Duncan Lorien has corrected over 2,000 years of human error in music.” That’s a lot to cram into one long weekend.

The seminar hits Australia in February – Brisbane 5-7th Feb, Canberra 12-14th Feb, Melbourne 19-21st Feb, Perth 27-28th Feb.

For a free info pack on the seminar, email info@musicseminar.com.au or text/call 0450 510 822.

It’s on again! The Australian Music Association and Australian Musician are pleased to announce that the Melbourne Guitar Show will return to the Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August 2016. The 2015 Melbourne Guitar Show was the biggest music event in Australia for the week it was staged, with almost 5,000 people flooding through the gates. Over 50 exhibitors, representing major suppliers, retailers, local guitar makers and vintage dealers were in attendance. The crowd lapped it up and took full advantage of the exclusive guitar show specials that were on offer. If they weren’t trying or buying guitars, attendees could enjoy performances from over 60 musicians on 2 main stages, as well as learn from the many educational sessions which were presented. The 2015 show featured the cream of the crop of local guitar-based talent including: Jeff Lang, Lloyd Spiegel, King of the North, Racer Axe, Geoff Achison, Shannon Bourne, Jimi Hocking, and The Davidson Brothers to name a few.

The Melbourne Guitar Show attracted a diverse audience from guitar aficionados seeking that elusive vintage bargain to families keen to have their kids meet and greet some of Australia’s finest guitarists.
The 2016 show will be bigger and better, featuring a dedicated acoustic guitar area, separated from the electric riffmeisters. Keep up to date with guitar show announcements as they occur on the dedicated Melbourne Guitar Show webpages.

THE RUNAWAYS’ CHERIE CURRIE OZ TOUR

Posted in Blog    //    Post Date - December 18, 2015

cheriecurrieCherie Currie, the voice of The Runaways is headed our way to perform here for the very first time, touring Australia and New Zealand in May 2016. The pioneering all-female rock band which included Currie, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox and Sandy West blasted onto the 70s music scene with their global smash single ‘Cherry Bomb’. Now Currie comes to Australia with her own band.

The Runaways created a sensation wherever they appeared and quickly catapulted from playing small clubs to selling out major stadiums – headlining shows with opening acts like The Ramones, Van Halen, Cheap Trick and Blondie. The band’s 2nd album featured the call to arms hit “Queens of Noise” and Cherie’s band-mate Joan Jett’s “I Love Playin’ with Fire”.

The Runaways were riding a wave of out-of-control international touring, hit singles (including “Heartbeat” and Lou Reed’s “Rock and Roll”), and platinum albums. But the rollercoaster started moving too wildly about on the rails for Cherie who departed the band and released her first solo album at the age of 18. Cherie recorded a number of albums with her twin sister Marie and later embarked upon a film career including roles in Foxes (alongside Jodie Foster), Parasite (which featured a young Demi Moore in a supporting role), and Steven Speilberg’s Twilight Zone, The Movie.

In 2010 Dakota Fanning portrayed Currie in The Runaways, a biographical drama film executive-produced by Joan Jett and based on Cherie’s own memoir, Neon Angel, which recounted life in the band and Cherie’s traumatic experiences with drug addiction, sex abuse, and her broken family. Cherie also appeared in Edgeplay, a documentary on her former band, produced by former Runaways bass guitarist Vicki Blue.

As well as performing on stage, Cherie is also a wood-carving artist, using a chainsaw to create her works. She opened her own gallery in California in 2005.

Cherie released a new solo album, Reverie, in 2015 which features appearances from ex-Runaway’s bandmate, Lita Ford and the final production work by former manager Kim Fowley. Recent live set lists include “American Nights”, “Is It Day Or Night”, “Heartbeat”, Queens Of Noise”, “California Paradise”, “Midnight Music” (all The Runaways), Lou Reed’s “Rock and Roll”, “Do You Love Me” by Kiss and David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel”.

Cherie and her new band recently popped their proverbial “Cherry” with an exclusive eight show tour of the U.K. that ended up selling out in many of the major markets including London. The Runaways never made it downunder, so don’t miss seeing the original “Cherry Bomb” for Cherie Currie’s first ever Australian and New Zealand tour!

I Built The Sky at Melbourne Guitar Show in August this year

I Built The Sky at Melbourne Guitar Show in August this year

JAMES NORBERT IVANYI + I BUILT THE SKY
2 EXCLUSIVE HEADLINE SHOWS
MARCH 2016

Multi Instrumental Extraordinaries JAMES NORBERT IVANYI and I BUILT THE SKY embark on an Exclusive 2 Date Headline Tour this March. Following their full band live debuts on the highly successful Plini + The Helix Nebula tour earlier this year, the two bands get ready for their own headline shows at The Factory Floor in Sydney on Friday 18th March, and The Workers Club in Melbourne on Saturday 19th March.

James is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and musician from Sydney, Australia. He performed and toured with bands for years before going solo in 2013 and releasing two internationally acclaimed albums “Aphasia” (2013) & “The Matter
Circumvention” (2015). His style of highly technical, modern metal fused with the sounds of the classic 1960’s & 70’s progressive/psychedelic rock-era have seen his fan base transcend generations and genres. His latest album received
flawless reviews around the world, and garnished the attention of some of the biggest names in the industry. He has been invited to perform at the prestigious NAMM event in Los Angeles the last 4 years running, and recently shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the guitar world, including Scott Henderson, Peter Thorn, Andy Wood and Canadian powerhouse Big Wreck. He will be premiering brand new music from his forthcoming EP due in early 2016.

Melbourne based Guitarist/Songwriter/Producer ‘Ro’ aka I Built The Sky has been gaining international acclaim with his music releases centred around melodic yet technically stunning guitar work. Ro has been involved in the Australian Music Industry for many years as a professional guitarist in the ‘originals’ music scene. His music endeavours have seen him perform at Australia’s Ultimate Drummers Weekend, Melbourne Guitar Show, Rod Laver Arena and Pyramid Rock Festival to name a few. In 2012 he decided to focus his creativity into a solo project now known as ‘I Built The Sky’ writing, producing and releasing everything himself. With 2 records under this moniker and having played just 2 shows, Ro has already gained endorsements from several companies including PRS Guitars (USA), Bare Knuckle Pickups (UK) and Sherlock Amplification (AUS). His music has also pricked the ears of some noteworthy Australian musicians including Josh Smith of Northlane “Fantastic guitar playing”, Drew Goddard of Karnivool “The Kids a Natural” and Luke Williams of Dead letter Circus “Outstanding Musicianship”. He too will be premiering brand new music from his forthcoming album due in mid 2016.

This will be a night of instrumental wizardry, with genres ranging from progressive metal, psychedelic rock, tech metal, djent and a whole lot more. Be sure to get down to these two very special shows and be blown away by some of Australia’s best instrumental talents.
