Included in this edition:
-RESPECT-
Respect. What is it? And where do you get it? In a business as tough as the music industry, there are a few who defy the odds and continue to create and perform music of great quality and integrity on a regular basis. Some are recognised for their work. Others, despite gaining critical acclaim, struggle to find a larger audience. In this edition we give credit where credit is due.
We begin with Jeff Jenkins sitting down with Dave Graney & Clare Moore, Spencer P. Jones, Angie Hart, and Lisa Miller and discussing ... Respect!
ARIA HALL OF FAME-What it's about and why we should all give a damn!
Greg Phillips charges his glass and salutes the ARIA Hall of Fame, reports on the 2008 ceremony, speaks with event producer Mark Pope, and chats with Max Merritt and Russell Morris, two of the most recent inductees into Australian music’s most exclusive club.
ARIA HALL OF FAME-MAX MERRITT
Rock, soul and R n’B legend Max Merritt put jet lag aside to chat with Greg Phillips about his Hall of Fame induction.
ARIA HALL OF FAME-RUSSELL MORRIS
Russell Morris is regarded as being our first successful singer-songwriter-performer. The singer of iconic tunes like ‘The Real Thing’ and ‘Wings of an Eagle’ was finally acknowledged by the ARIA board when he was inducted into the 2008 Hall of Fame. Australian Musician’s Greg Phillips paid Russell a visit to chat about induction night and the life of a long-established act in the modern day music world.
WAYNE KRANTZ, TAL WILKENFELD, KEITH CARLOCK TOUR CHAT
WAYNE KRANTZ
One of the world's finest and most unique fusion guitarists Wayne Krantz, joins bass wunderkind Tal Wilkenfeld (Jeff Beck) and drum sensation Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, Sting) in a not to be missed club tour of Australia in October. Australian Musician's Greg Phillips caught up with two thirds of the trio, Krantz and Wilkenfeld for a pre tour chat.
KRANTZ, WILKENFELD, CARLOCK TOUR CHAT
TAL WILKENFELD
Australian born, US based bass phenomenon Tal Wilkenfeld's profile leapt to another level last year when she blew the crowd away with her amazing performance backing legendary rock god Jeff Beck at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival. Long prior to that gig however, Tal had already been forging a reputation as a significant bassist playing alongside Herbie Hancock, Joss Stone, Wayne Shorter and Corinne Bailey Rae. She hooked up with Wayne Krantz and Keith Carlock for the recording of her own album 'Transformation' in 2006 and has been jamming intermittently with the guys ever since. On the eve of the Wayne Krantz Australian tour, Tal took some time to chat to Australian Musician.
ROSS HANNAFORD
When word got out that we were producing an edition acknowledging our most respected artists, I lost count of the times people told me we had to include 'Hannaford'. Most will know Ross Hannaford as the eccentric propeller-capped guitarist from iconic Australian band Daddy Cool. Within our local musician community however, Ross is known as being our greatest living 'feel' guitarist, possessing a tone that sings with incredible expression and clarity. I was honoured to be invited into Hanna's home to chat about the local legend's music career.
CAM BUTLER
Those already familiar with Cam Butler's music will know that he's no one trick pony. Three equally fine solo albums preceded this one and as guitarist and main songwriter in legendary Melbourne instrumental trio Silver Ray, Cam, along with Julitha Ryan and Brett Poliness delivered many an epic and passionate album, not to mention the numerous fabled live performances over the years in pokey little Fitzroy pubs. Silver Ray's current, and sorry to say probable final album "Homes for Everyone" deserves to be in any real music afficionado's record collection. Cam speaks with Greg Phillips
XAVIER RUDD
Xavier Rudd treads new territory with an album titled Dark Shades of Blue. Australian Musician’s Baz Bardoe follows Rudd to the dark side and investigates!
DIESEL-Days Like These
Australian Musician's Greg Phillips spoke with Diesel just prior to the release of his new album 'Days Like These'.
THE WHITLAMS
The Whitlams look back on a 15 year career, like what they see and release a best-of collection called ‘Truth, Beauty and A Picture of You’. Eva Roberts spoke to Whitlams main man Tim Freedman about the new compilation
VICTORIA THEODORE (Stevie Wonder band)
Stevie Wonder band keyboardist, singer and dancer Victoria Theodore spoke with Greg Phillips prior to Stevie's 2008 Australian tour
HOLLY THROSBY -A Loud Call
Holly Throsby has released a beautiful new album titled 'A Loud Call'. Greg Phillips spoke with Holly prior to the album's release
DAVID BRIDIE -Succumb
David Bridie is a survivor. He has been able to carve out a music career in Australia for over two and half decades without ever having to compromise his integrity. His songwriting talent and musicianship has consistently impressed, whether it be with world music pioneers Not Drowning Waving, the eclectic My Friend the Chocolate Cake or his acclaimed film and TV soundtrack work. He is passionate about music, Australia, its people and nearby island neighbours. In short, he cares about humanity and building better community, the important things we often neglect. David has just released his third solo album. It's called ‘Succumb’, and it's yet another mature, quality release well worth investigating. Story by Greg Phillips
THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT Studio exclusive
While recording their brand new album, ‘Final Conversation of Kings’, The Butterfly Effect granted Australian Musician’s Joe Matera extraordinary access to the studio.
THE SAND PEBBLES
Turning on, tuning in and dropping out, albeit briefly, on a remote South Australian beach last summer, Melbourne rock time-trippers The Sand Pebbles shrugged off the urban hum-drum to plant the organic seeds of their fourth album, the wonderfully expansive Ceduna. On the eve of their psych tribute gig to the late LSD guru Albert Hoffman, the band’s guitarist-vocalist Andrew Tanner speaks with Australian Musician about dunes, drugs and (minimal) dubs.
FIONA BOYES Adelaide International Guitar Festival 08
Since winning the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2003, blues guitarist and singer/songwriter Fiona Boyes has been carving a nice little niche for herself in the blues music world. Fiona has gained much respect from not only American audiences, but also from her US blues counterparts, particularly for her stunning BMA nominated album 'Lucky 13'. Boyes enjoyed her time so much at the inaugural Adelaide Guitar Festival last year, that she's travelling back home to participate again. Fiona Spoke to Greg Phillips from her American headquarters in Portland, Oregon.
REMEMBERING BRUCE CLARKE
Australia recently lost a respected, pioneering guitarist and music educator, Bruce Clarke. Australian Musician's guitar columnist Simon Patterson pays tribute to Bruce.
