FEAR
FACTORY MEETS FRANKENBOK -
Frankenbok guitarist Scott Lang
has long been a fan of Fear Factory,
citing them as a major influence on his
playing and musical development. When
Burton C. Bell had a spare hour before
the Melbourne show with Korn, Scott had
a chance to delve into the inner workings
of Fear Factory and discuss the ups and
downs of playing in a band. Australian
Musician’s James O’Toole
was present to record the conversation
and throw in a couple of questions for
good measure.
CAT
EMPIRE - Following
the success of their platinum-selling
debut self-titled album, it seems The
Cat Empire is well and truly bound for
glory. The Australian sound, described
by the band as music infused with "jazz,
hip-hop, Cuban, Reggae, and ska-inspired
funk" containing ingredients from
"Australia, Cuba, Jamaica, Africa,
Europe, the Bronx and Spain" has
made an impact on audiences around the
globe.
LITTLE
BIRDY'S TOUR DIARY
- In
February 2004 Perth based quartet ‘Little
Birdy’ hit the road in promotion
of their new single “This is a
Love Song”. Australian Musician
thought it might be fun to get the band
to document two weeks in the life of
“Little Birdy” on tour...
PAUL
KELLY - It
was a scene many a music scribe would
have witnessed. Paul Kelly sitting in
a record company board room politely
fulfiling his media commitments in promotion
of a new album, and always (if it's summer)
within eyeshot of his other passion,
a TV screen beaming out a telecast of
the day's play of a cricket test. "Hayden's
just gone for a paltry 37" he tells
me after one of the few times recently
Australia's opening batsman Matthew Hayden
had not scored a century. That's why
Kelly is held in such high regard by
the Australian public. He not only tells
stories about everyday Australia, he
is everyman Australia.
PETER
LUSCOMBE (DRUMMER
PAUL KELLY) - Paul Kelly band member
Peter Luscombe is one of Australia's
finest drummers. Never one to just keep
the beat, he is as much responsible for
melody as any of the band members. Australian
Musician asked him to get specific about
his set up for this album…
TONY
JOE WHITE MEETS KIERAN MURPHY
- One
of them has survived 38 years in the
music industry, the other has only inhabited
the earth for 15 years. Tony Joe White,
the Swamp Fox has released sixteen albums,
had his songs recorded by Sting, Emmylou
Harris, Ray Charles, Tina Turner and
a guy named Elvis Presley, and sold millions
of albums worldwide. Kieran Murphy, a
gifted young Australian guitar picker,
can (so far) only lay claim to one independently
recorded album. Kieran however, has the
world at his feet. He won 'Young Guitarist
of the Year' at 2002's Frankston Guitar
Festival, has performed at The Port Fairy
and Apollo Bay Music Festivals, and in
February played the major stage at the
Melbourne International Music and Blues
Festival trading licks with Tommy Emmanuel.
GEORGE
- Acceptance
of Brisbane band George's first album
Polyserena was universal. Great songs,
fabulous musicians and two incredible
vocalists, a winning combination. Where
to begin album two is the eternal conundrum
that hounds many a band, particularly
if they don't have their collective heads
together. For George the approach was
organic.
HARPER
- If
the Oxford Dictionary defined musicians
in the same manner it does words, the
listing for local blues/soul legend Harper
would read something like this...
Harper (Harp-ah),
n. incredibly skilled blues harp player,
gifted songwriter, soulful vocalist,
tours incessantly (U.S., Europe and Australia).
Followers of Harper's music career will
know that those four facts are inextricably
linked.
