Included
in this edition:
WOLFMOTHER'S
BIG DAY OUT DIARY - To
date Wolfmother has only released a four track EP, but the
three piece rockers' concoction of Sabbath, Zeppelin and retro/nowtro
broth has won them many fans in a relatively short space of
time. Their energetic 2005 Big Day Out performances showed
that they can work a crowd.
BRASS
IN ROCK - Would the classic Rolling
Stones' Exile On Main Street' be one of rock music's greatest achievements
without the famous brass section of the
great Bobby Keyes and Jim Price? Can you imagine Gerry Raffertys
Baker Street without Raf Ravenscroft's stunning sax intro? Did
you know that Eric Claptons
concept of his early playing was to imitate saxplayers in blues ensembles,
and substitute his guitaring for the brass lines?
JACK
HOWARD - If any Australian band
knew how to incorporate brass into a rock context, it was Hunters
and Collectors. Trumpet player Jack Howard, along with
his mates Jeremy Smith (French horn) and Michael Waters (Trombone) helped
to create many an unforgettable night for punters swept away by the band's
combination of sheer power and beautiful touch.
JOE
CAMILLERI - Joe Camilleri is an
Australian music icon, an exceptionally gifted musician and
songwriter with around forty years of live and recording experience
under his belt. He is also regarded as one of our finest saxophone players.
Greg Phillips tracked Joe down to discuss the changing role of brass
in rock music.
BRIAN
WILSON's BAND COMES TO TOWN -
It's 4pm and Brian's personal
assistant is already asking for set up of the quick meet and greet
for a few select fans following tonight's
show. The plan is that Wilson will do two songs ('Fun, Fun, Fun' and
'Love & Mercy') following the Smile album performance, dash back
for a five minute meet and greet, then he'll be out of there. However
due to the incredible audience adulation on the night, and in celebration
of the Grammy nominations, Wilson performs six songs after Smile, including
Beach Boys classics like 'Help Me Rhonda' and 'Do
it Again'. In fact Wilson performs for almost three hours in total, playing
45 songs including stunning versions of 'God Only Knows' and 'Sail On
Sailor'.
DAN
BRODIE - Forget
what you know about Dan Brodie: the pedal steel, the outlaw
aura, the smouldering country-rock of his first two albums
with the Broken Arrows. His new album Beautiful Crimes is a
pop record of the most lush and potent kind.
STEVE
MOYSTON - MY
NIGHT AT THE GRAMMYS - One
of the proudest musicians on the Grammy stage was Sydney born
musician Steve Mostyn. Steve recently scored the bass player
gig in Alicia Keys' band and found himself on stage
at The Staples Center backed by a 36 piece orchestra, conducted
by music legend Quincy Jones.
THE
THRILLS CONNOR DEASEY - Irish
quintet The Thrills made a huge name for themselves worldwide
in 2003 with the release of their stunning debut album "So
Much For The City". Featuring impressively constructed pop
songs, beautiful melodies and gorgeous arrangements, the follow-up, "Let's
Bottle Bohemia", was another giant leap forward for The Thrills
in their quest for world domination.
