Gear road tests! Ashton AWM100 UHF Wireless Microphone
Reviewer: James Manson
Distributor: Ashton

It seems like yesterday that the luxury of a cordless microphone was only available to the privileged few who could afford to hand over the 'moolah' that would have bought you the guitar equivalent of a Fender Strat. With more manufacturers expanding their range and entering different markets in the music hardware business, much of the high-end professional equipment is becoming accessible to all, and is readily available in music shops nationwide.

Ashton is rapidly building a reputation for delivering well-manufactured instruments and hardware to the masses at reasonable prices that will not break the bank. The Ashton AWM100 UHF Wireless Microphone System delivers an all -inclusive radio mike system that offers the freedom of going wireless at a truly affordable price.

The AWM100 is smartly packaged and comes with the AWM-100 receiver (including dual nine volt battery charger), adapter, and microphone. The front layout of the receiver panel is laid out with a power LED indicator, sound signal LED indicator, microphone signal LED indicator, dual 9V battery charger, left and right charger LED indicators and antenna. The back panel is laid out as follows-volume control, AF output, DC input and power switch. The robust microphone looks great and consists of a battery cover, power switch, power LED indicator and a Low battery LED Indicator.

Out of the box, the Ashton AWM100 is straightforward and easy to set up as long as you follow the systematic instructions in the brief but informative manual provided.

Once fired up the AMW100 proved to have a long-range signal with no radio interference, which sometimes you'll experience with radio systems in the lower end of the market. The unit includes auto noise reduction, auto compression and eight available UHF bands.

The tonal characteristics of the microphone resemble that of an SM58 with a frequency response of 50Hz through to 18Hz at 3dB. The antenna on the receiver comes with a built in noise terminator. With an A/B reference, the AWM100 struggled to produce the clarity and particularly the level of an AKG HT50 Wireless microphone, but to be fair the AKG is more than three times the price. Obviously the AWM100 has it's limitations but really the microphone does a fine all round job of providing the benefits of going wireless with a good vocal signal that would work well in most live environments.

What I liked...Auto noise reduction seemed to work well, and with 1%, distortion proved almost impossible to get a dirty signal

Dislikes...could have done with a little more level

Ashton will soon be releasing more products in their range, including new improved microphone models.
