GUITAR TRACKS PRO

It seems only a few years ago that the porta studio was the only option if you needed to lay down ideas or record your instruments without spending a fortune at a pro studio. Then along came software based sequencers and recorders that have evolved into today's full blown computer workstations. With exceptional quality and a multitude of features, software recording has brought the commercial studio to the tabletop. If you’re a guitar player and terminology such as ADSR, RPNs & NPRNs and the trend of midi based set ups has put you off taking the plunge into digital recording bliss on your PC, then maybe Cakewalk’s Guitar Tracks Pro is for you.

Cakewalk Pro Audio™ is the audio recording/sequencing software of choice in America and their Guitar Tracks Pro could really find popularity amongst musicians who have no interest in midi/keyboard sequencing.

Overview

Squarely aimed at guitarists, GT Pro can record and playback up to 32 tracks of digital audio and digitally bounce audio for virtually unlimited tracks. Unlike bouncing tracks on a tape based recorder, there is no loss of audio quality when bouncing digitally. The interface is easy to decipher and resembles a multitrack tape deck. The ReValver™ SE guitar amp simulator lets you create custom guitar tones with ease and you can edit your masterpiece with the Edit and arrange point-and-click editing tools. Using a multi-channel audio card allows you to record your whole band with 32-bit mixing and audio effects, and support for up to 24-bit/96 kHz audio. Guitar Tracks Pro is fully loaded with professional, non-destructive audio editing effects including: Dynamics Processing (Compressor/ Gate/ Expander), Parametric EQ,Chorus,Flange Delay and Reverb.

Unfortunately the real-time effects are at the mixing stage not the recording stage as is the case with most software recorders, so you have to play your guitar track then add the effects once recorded. This can be a little strange at first for the uninitiated. You can add hundreds of additional DirectX-compatible plug-ins available from third party manufacturers.(DirectX is Microsoft's standard for Windows that provides direct access to hardware features instead of going via the Windows interface. DirectX is responsible for many of the highest quality effects available today for PC.) You can lay down backing tracks with Guitar Tracks Pro's extensive loop library which includes a complete ACID format drum loop library. You can audition these and other ACID format audio loops, then import them into your song. A really cool feature is the ability to import loops at project tempo which saves a heap of stuffing around, ya wanna play guitar not edit samples don't you? If you don't like the included samples you can have hours of fun making your own beats with the brilliant Fruityloops Express drum loop generator included on the installation CD. Also included is the excellent hands-free chromatic tuner. Once you have recorded and mixed your track you can export to wave so you can burn to CD or export to MP3 for the internet, so the world can hear how talented you really are.
