| ADAM BRAND The annual Tamworth Country Music Festival, culminating in the all-important awards show is an increasingly significant music event. Perth born singer, songwriter Adam Brand knows well the worth of winning three Tamworth Golden Guitar awards. For the country singer in Australia it means nationwide exposure and opportunities that might never have existed otherwise. His self-titled and award-winning debut album, featuring the country hit "Last Man Standing" has since sold steadily and Brand is now highly regarded as a serious contender for the spoils that are currently enjoyed by the likes of James Blundell and Lee Kernaghan. Not unlike a young Elvis Presley in looks, Brand is also a huge fan of stock car racing. It's no wonder the King is one of Brand's biggest influences. Like the majority of country music artists Brand is honest in his reflections of his life and music. He's only been writing songs for a few years and been playing guitar for less, he grew up aspiring to be a drummer. His manager, and well known bass player, Graham Thompson helped steer Adam in the right direction and put together an awesome collection of musicians to back him in the studio. Included in the studio band at various stages were Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa), Don Walker (Cold Chisel), Mark Punch (Renee Geyer) and Hamish Stuart (John Farnham). Brand recalls the experience. "They didn't just come into the studio and go OK I'm getting paid to do this amount of time, they really came in and became part of the project, and Don Walker too... I've been a big Chisel fan all my life. It was a great experience. I recorded one of his songs and he played piano on the track. I've got a song from him already for the next album." Despite the ample musical assistance Brand received in the recording of the disc, there is enough evidence displayed on the album to indicate that this young performer has enough talent and depth and maturity in his songs to be taking a tighter hold of the reins on future recordings. He treated the sessions very much as a learning experience and has a fair idea of where he's heading next time out. "There are a few raw bits in there but hey I'm pretty raw. I'm not very polished mate." he says of his first recording. "Like anything if you had more time and money there'd be a few things you would change but I think it's a pretty true indication of where I'm at. There were certain vocal sounds that I would do differently. Things that we were really getting the hang of by the end of the album that we can start off with at the end of the year with the new one." One of the Tamworth prizes Adam is most excited about is the endorsement he receives from local guitar manufacturer Maton guitars. " They're making me a custom made guitar to the specs and colour I wanted right down to putting my name in the fretboard. It's a jumbo guitar and I'm getting it coloured in a classic sunburst colour that they haven't used on their guitars for many years. It's an Australian company too, which is great. I went to their factory a few weeks ago and in their loading dock there are big pellets of Australian wood like Queensland maple. So it comes in there raw material and it goes through the whole process right there in their factory from a lump of wood to a beautiful guitar. There's a lot of history there and being a country artist we sing about traditional things and it's a company that has a lot of respect here and overseas. My dad bought a Maton, an Alva which he bought for 40 bucks in Perth in 1966. He just gave me the guitar last year and I bought it down to Maton and showed them. It feels good to get an endorsement from the company my dad bought his first guitar from." Brand is looking forward to hitting the road with his own touring band later in the year. Being from Perth, he doesn't mind clocking up the miles either so look out for the Adam Brand band in a town near you soon. Greg Phillips |
