STEVENIEVE copySteve Nieve has been playing keyboards for Elvis Costello for more than thirty years, firstly as a member of The Attractions, and in more recent times with The Imposters. Steve also has worked on Costello’s solo albums and alongside Elvis and Burt Bacharach as part of the Painted From Memory album and tour.

Perhaps the most intimate performances, however, were those where Elvis and Steve toured together creating a spellbinding tour-de-force of piano, guitar and voice. Anybody who has witnessed these or indeed any of Elvis Costello’s live shows will appreciate the special magic that occurs when Steve Nieve is let loose to solo on the piano.

Now, finally, Australia will get to experience a full evening of this magic as Steve and his piano take centre stage. Steve Nieve was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 as a member of Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

He has performed on stage or recorded with such greats including- Sting, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Madness, Squeeze, Burt Bacharach, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Morressey, Lou Reed, Annie Clark (St. Vincent), Vanessa Paradis, Robert Wyatt, Francois Hardy, Jane Birkin, Sandy Shaw, Allen Toussaint, Paul Weller, Kirsty Maccoll, Mick Jagger, Smokey Robinson, Barbara Bonney, Laurie Anderson and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
He has released eight solo albums since 1983.  His most recent, critically acclaimed,  ToGetHer features duets with Elvis Costello, Sting, Ron Sexsmith, Joe Sumner,  Muriel Teddori, Glenn Tilbrook, Tall Ulyss, Vanessa Paradis,  and Laurie Anderson.

JEFF 'TAIN' WATTS 4 - 4 credit Oliver Link

Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts

The 2014 lineup for the Wangaratta Jazz & Blues Festival has just been announced. Now in its 25th year, the Festival has grown to become an internationally renowned event, attracting around 20,000 visitors each year and more than 200 jazz and blues artists from the USA, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Across the four days and nights of the pre-Melbourne Cup Day long weekend – Friday 31 October to Monday 3 November, the city will jump to the sounds of jazz and blues, from more than 300 musicians in over 80 concerts on the main program, and over 30 concerts on the Main Street free stages; as well as artist talks and masterclasses, all in venues in walking distance within the township and at nearby wineries

Headliners announced for this year’s festival include: Enrico Rava (Italy), Joe Louis Walker (USA), Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts (USA), Laura Watts (USA), Roger Manins (NZ), Lisa Parrot (Aus/USA) and blues harp master Harper (Aus/USA).

Plus you can add a vast line-up of Australia’s finest musicians to the list too, including: Allan Browne, Bob Sedergreen, Bondi Cigars, Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk, Emma Pask, Fiona Boyes, James Muller, Mike Nock, Paul Grabowsky, Ray Beadle, Sam Keevers, and a whole heap more.

Venues include the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, local restaurants, the Blues Marquee by the river and the two Reid Street Community Stages. The Festival also features food, wine and free concerts all weekend in the centre of town. Wangaratta is renowned for locally grown produce and wines from the region’s family-owned vineyards, all of which are on display at the Sunday Market. Other activities in the area include the wineries along Prosecco Road in the King Valley, bike rides from Beechworth to Wangaratta and a shuttle bus service to the Milawa Gourmet region

Artistic director Adrian Jackson said, “25 years is a landmark that no-one would have been willing to bet on back when the Festival began as a relatively modest but ambitious event in 1990. The fact that we have made it this far is due to the incredible support the Festival has received from the local community, and the way it has been embraced so enthusiastically by musicians and music lovers from around Australia and overseas.”

Any die-hard Australian indie rock ‘n’ roll fan might want to make their way to Melbourne this weekend to honour three local guitar legends. Melbourne’s Leaps and Bounds Music Festival proudly presents the Living Legends series across three consecutive nights honouring three renowned Melbourne based musicians with worldwide reputations. They rarely receive the attention they duly deserve and the lack of commercial expectation has allowed them to continue to grow creatively and produce music on their own terms, inspiring and mentoring other musicians. All three regularly gig in various Melbourne venues, usually to a much smaller crowd than they deserve but that is not why they do it.  Leaps & Bounds salutes Kim Salmon, Spencer P Jones and Charlie Owen.

It is a coincidence that the three are or have been guitarists in the Australian super-group the Beasts of Bourbon, each player has been prolific for over 30 years and have an incredible musical catalogue. The three shows will be take place at the Tote Hotel in Collingwood over one weekend, Friday 11th, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July.

Each night will have a focus on one of the ‘living legends’:

First up is Kim Salmon on Friday 11th July with a cool cast of musicians playing from his catalogue which includes the Scientists, Kim Salmon & the Surrealists, Antenna, the Business, the Darling Downs, Salmon and Beasts of Bourbon. The Scientists, formed by Kim Salmon in the late 70s, are considered precursors of grunge.

Saturday 12th July sees interstate musicians, peers, young bands and some of his own band members on the Tote’s stage in appreciation of Spencer P Jones.  The music of the Johnnys, Beasts of Bourbon, Hell to Pay, as well as Spencer P Jones with the Last Gasp, Cow Penalty, the Escape Committee and the Nothing Butts will be performed.

The final night, Sunday 13th July is all about Charlie Owen, one of Australia’s most revered guitarists and wingmen. The live showcase of Owen’s career includes material by Louis Tillet & His Cast of Aspersions, the New Christs, the Divinyls, the Working Class Ringos, Tex, Don & Charlie, Tendrils, the Dark Horses, Beasts of Bourbon and more.

The honoured musicians themselves will not be performing on the night – but they will be there.
With Gareth Liddiard, Mick Harvey, Dan Kelly, Caroline Kennedy, Brian Hooper, Penny Ikinger, Tex Napalm, Machine Translations, the Bulls, Midnight Scavengers, Marilyn Rose and the Thorns, Teenage Libido, the Braves and many more to be announced.

The Living Legends Series at the Tote, 71 Johnston St, Collingwood. Presented by Leaps and Bounds Music Festival, PBS FM and Beat.
Tickets are $25 for each night or $60 for all three.

Brisbane indie soul songstress Bec Laughton has been stopping audiences dead in their tracks ever since they heard her perfect pairing of infectious pop melodies backed by her powerhouse vocals. Her brand new EP M & R solidifies Laughton as an artist with amazing versatility. This may be a result of her sublime taste in collaborators which has seen her team up with producer Graham Ritchie (Emma Louise, Big Scary, Skinny Jean) for the two previously released singles, as well as some of the most exciting names in Australian dance music. M & R features the unstoppable singles ‘Gonna Love You’ and ‘Number 1 (Heartbreak)’ with an additional four unheard tracks and remixes courtesy of YesYou & Tyler Touché.

Having traipsed around the country and roused many a full house on her own headline tour, the recent developments are leading to a huge next step. She recently snared a coveted grant from the Lord Mayor’s Young & Emerging Artists Fellowship which will see her work in the States with Grammy-award winning bassist, composer and producer Michael League of New York-based Snarky Puppy.

Bec’s recent teaming with 123 Agency has also proved frutiful as they secure slots on the lineups for both Soulfest in Brisbane – alongside idols such as D’Angelo and Maxwell –  and Peregian Originals with the likes of Sticky Fingers, Kingswood and Bonjah.

Australian Musician is pleased to profile Bec Laughton’s video for the single ‘Number 1 (Heartbreak).

vinesThe Vines have been a mercurial band since they arrived in 2002. Their talent took hold when the debut album ‘Highly Evolved’ launched them as one of rock music’s new saviours. It was a height though that the volatile band was never going to maintain for long. At some point the tales took over the talent and became their namesake camouflage.

Out of sight the band might have been, but not out of the studio. Today The Vines announce a new album ‘Wicked Nature’ being released worldwide on September 2nd. For the first time it’s a double album, 22 brand new songs.

On ‘Wicked Nature’ frontman Craig Nicholls makes his debut in the role of record producer. He co-produced disc one with regarded Australian tape loving analogue producer Paul McKercher (You Am I) and then he assumes full control over the production duties for the second disc.

‘Wicked Nature’ is the band’s first independent release. The album will be released on a new label of the same name. It will include a physical release on both double CD and double gatefold vinyl in the UK, Europe, USA, Japan, Australia and all other territories digitally.

Pledge Music are working with The Vines on a series of exclusives in the lead up to the album release. These offers will all be exclusive to Pledge Music and include personally autographed copies of the vinyl from the band. Pre order the album here:

The first single is ‘Metalzone’ which is being released worldwide in the week commencing July 14.

yesProg-rock royalty returns to Australia in November when classic-rockers YES hit our stages to play the entire Fragile (1971) and Close To The Edge (1972) albums, as well as excerpts from their soon to be released album, Heaven & Earth. This is similar to previous recent tours, where they played 1971′s ‘The Yes Album,’ ‘Close to the Edge’ and 1977′s ‘Going for the One.’ Instead of the third album offering, Yes will do an encore of their greatest hits as well as some tracks from the new album. The folks at the Australian Musician magazine office are finding it hard to not to groove to this infectious track from Aston Shuffle. Co-written with and featuring the vocals of Sydney songstress Elizabeth Rose, ASTON SHUFFLE’S “Back & Forth” marries classic RNB pop vibes with a driven house beat to create a hooky sing-a-long story of a bad relationship as stuck on repeat as the single is likely to be.

The colourful clip, directed by Alex de Bonrepos and with a cameo from comedy legend Andy Dick, tells the same story; Girl ditches bad boy, hangs with nice guys but can’t find contentment, ends up with worse bad boys and finally decides to break the loop.

The Back & Forth Remix EP is now available and coincides with the band announcing new and sold out dates on their forthcoming Photographs National Live Tour as well as new supports and guests. The Astons will take the stage at North West Festival in Port Hedland on their way to Perth, and Melbourne is getting one more night with the announcement of a second performance at The Corner Hotel on Thursday September 4th with the Friday 5th show sold all the way out. The boys are also bringing some friends along for the ride, adding vocalists Greg Gould and Cultra to the show, and inviting 17 year old wunderkind Just A Gent as main national support. But before it all kicks off they’ll take their live show to the US for the first time, performing at the prestigious Full Moon Festival at Governors Island in NYC on August 8th. Back & Forth, the new album Photographs, and the National Live Tour are all on sale now at

angusjuliaAngus & Julia Stone are set to bring their critically acclaimed live show back to where it all began for a string of headline tour dates this September. The forthcoming tour will see the band perform many of their most recognised and well-loved tracks, along with exciting new material from the soon to be released third album produced by Rick Rubin.
“This album is extraordinary. Angus and Julia are truly unique musicians. They are authentic and pure people who do things from the heart. I’ve never worked with anyone like them before’’ – Rick Rubin

Angus & Julia have had very successful careers both as a duo and more recently, independently as solo artists. It was the legendary US producer Rick Rubin (Jay Z, Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash etc) who being a fan and familiar with their musical history, suggested they get together once more as a band. Angus and Julia spent time writing and recording at Rubin’s Shangri La Studios in Malibu and the result is their brilliant, forthcoming album “Angus & Julia Stone”.

This September sees the band take to the live stage on their first national tour since 2011 and will include shows at some of the nation’s most iconic venues including the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Palais Theatre.

Joining them on the road will be the blogosphere’s most talked about act of 2013, Vancouver Sleep Clinic, aka 18 year old Brisbanite Tim Bettinson, who released his debut EP earlier this year to rave reviews.  Described as a combination of soaring falsetto vocals built upon progressive synthetic instrumentation to create an ambient base for a vessel of emotional connections to be made.
