In NAMM Show 2019 news, Supro has announced a reissue of its 1961 hardtail Dual Tone guitar, which was famously used by David Bowie on his Reality album and tours thereafter.

David Bowie’s love of the Dual Tone was strong, as evidenced by the guitar’s frequent appearance in promotional photos from his post-9/11 era in New York City. Bowie’s Dual Tone guitar features prominently on the cover of the New Killer Star single, echoing the cover art for Link Wray’s iconic “Rumble!”. With Bowie’s face just out of view, the focus of the image becomes the guitar itself. This begs the question: why is Bowie’s face cropped out of the image? Why is the focus on the guitar? Maybe we aren’t supposed to know? Then we remember the album title: Reality.

“I feel that reality has become an abstract for so many people over the last 20 years. Things that they regarded as truths seem to have just melted away, and it’s almost as if we’re thinking post-philosophically now. There’s nothing to rely on any more. No knowledge, only interpretation of those facts that we seem to be inundated with on a daily basis. Knowledge seems to have been left behind and there’s a sense that we are adrift at sea. There’s nothing more to hold onto, and of course political circumstances just push that boat further out.”  – David Bowie from “Recording Reality” – Sound on Sound Magazine, October 2003

The first batch of four hundred David Bowie 1961 Dual Tone guitars will be released on January 8th, 2019 in honour of David’s birthday. Each instrument is numbered by hand and comes with a Supro deluxe gig bag and certificate of authenticity.

• Mahogany Body, Maple Neck with Pau Ferro Fingerboard
• Individually numbered
• Mirror-finish Bowie headstock inlay
• Supro Vistatone pickups
• 24 ¾” scale length
• 12” fretboard radius
• Ergonomic set-neck design
• Signed and numbered certificate of authenticity included

Jackson is honored to welcome incredibly talented guitar genius Jeff Loomis of Nevermore and Arch Enemy to its artist roster.

“I’m very excited to announce that I will be working with Jackson guitars on many upcoming projects,” Loomis said. “We are underway designing a Jeff Loomis signature model that will be unveiled at the 2019 NAMM Show in Anaheim, Calif.”

Emulating the brisk fretwork of his guitar idols, Loomis first burst on the music scene in his home state of Wisconsin as a teenager. After being crowned the winner of a Guitar Wars competition and a battle of the bands with his first band, Fear-Tech, Loomis landed an audition with Megadeth. Then only 16 years old, he was deemed too young to join, and instead went on to craft a complex playing style all his own.

Loomis has since seared his mark on multiple subgenres of metal with his distinctive rhythmic style, smooth technique and breakneck speed. His uncommon guitar style and sharp songwriting prowess became central to Seattle-based progressive metal band Nevermore’s sound, as heard on acclaimed albums Dead Heart in a Dead World and This Godless Endeavor.
Loomis said his connection with Jackson dates all the way back to the early ’90s and his earliest days with Nevermore.

“I started playing Jackson guitars early on in my youth and in the early stages of my first band, Nevermore,” Loomis said. “To be able to work with their excellent staff of amazing luthiers and craftsman on a one-to-one basis now is really a dream come true.”

After departing Nevermore, Loomis released two solo albums bursting with intricate fretboard action and soaring solos. Now, as guitarist for world-renowned Swedish melodic death metal act Arch Enemy, he adds brute force to his masterful and complex playing, and he continues to build on his legacy with truly astonishing riffs.

Loomis’s spellbinding playing is heard on the latest Arch Enemy release Will to Power, which the band is now touring behind through mid 2019.

Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) today announced it is collaborating with one of rock’s most legendary guitar players – Jimmy Page – to recreate his famous 1959 Fender Telecaster 50 years after Led Zeppelin formed in October 1968. Among music’s most iconic guitars is Jimmy Page’s Telecaster, known for its two “mirror” and “dragon” designs. It helped launch Page’s career in The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin, and the guitar was used to record “Led Zeppelin I” along with countless hit songs on world-renowned albums. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin and Page’s storied career as a guitar icon, Fender will release four artist signature guitar models throughout 2019, giving fans and collectors the chance to own a piece of history. Two models will be made on Fender’s production lines, and two will be produced in the Fender Custom Shop – dubbed the “Limited Edition Jimmy Page Telecaster Set.”
“It’s an incredible honor that one of the most-respected rock legends has entrusted Fender to recreate one of his most-prized guitars,” said Mike Lewis, VP of Product Development at Fender Custom Shop. “Some of the most-esteemed artists in the world work with the Fender Custom Shop, because it is the pinnacle of craftsmanship for the Fender brand and the guitar-building community.”

“This unique Fender Telecaster has an amazing backstory and helped inspire some of the greatest rock music of all time, both in the later years of The Yardbirds and at the genesis of Led Zeppelin,” added Justin Norvell, EVP Fender Products. “Now we’re giving a new generation of players access to two great instruments in honor of Jimmy, his storied career and amazing musical body of work created and performed on this guitar.”
Page originally received the Telecaster in 1966 from Jeff Beck, who gifted it to Page for recommending him to The Yardbirds. Through the years, the Telecaster took on several looks and personas, as Page customized it aesthetically and sonically. When he first received it, the guitar was undecorated in its factory white blonde finish and remained that way until February 1967, when he added eight circular mirrors to the body. Page played his mirrored Telecaster only briefly in the final years of The Yardbirds, and by mid-1967 he was ready to change the look. He removed the mirrors, completely stripped and repainted the instrument himself, this time hand-painting a mystical dragon on the body.

When Led Zeppelin was formed in October 1968, the Dragon Telecaster became Page’s go-to instrument and he played it on stage and in the studio until 1969. It was also the main guitar used on the legendary Led Zeppelin I album. Page went on tour in 1969, and upon his return, he discovered a friend had kindly stripped the body and painted over the dragon paint job. The paint job compromised the sound and wiring, leaving only the neck pickup working. He salvaged the neck and put it on his brown string bender Tele, and has since re-stripped and restored the body in full.

“This guitar is so special and has so much history, so I approached Fender to see if they’d be interested in recreating it,” Page said. “They really got it 110 percent right, or 150 percent right. It’s so absolutely as it is, as it should be, and as it was.”
“Visiting the Fender Custom Shop to sign and paint the guitars with Paul Waller was a real thrill,” he added. “To see all those absolute gems on the wall, it’s a pretty amazing experience.”

Among the four artist signature models will be two highly collectible, limited edition Fender Custom Shop versions masterbuilt by Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Paul Waller – one with mirrors and the other with the painted dragon. For nearly eight months, Page has worked closely with Paul Waller, Master Builder at the Fender Custom Shop, to advise throughout the process, assuring every detail was accurately recreated. Only 50 units of each Fender Custom Shop model will be made available with personal touches from Page himself, including a handwritten signature on the headstock and hand-painted flourishes on the guitar body’s dragon artwork. Known for its world-renowned quality and craftsmanship, the Fender Custom Shop has built instruments for some of the world’s most-esteemed guitar and bass players over the past 31 years.

“Jimmy first approached us in February with the idea to recreate this Telecaster, and as we were planning, I could feel his passion throughout the process,” said Paul Waller, Fender Custom Shop Master Builder. “To achieve his vision, I wanted to get every little detail replicated exactly, so you couldn’t tell the difference from the originals and these models. That’s what we’re known for in the Fender Custom Shop: quality craftsmanship and authenticity.”

Fender will also build both mirror and painted versions on its production lines, which will be more accessibly priced for a broader base of fans to purchase. While these will not be hand-signed and hand-painted by the artist, Page did consult with Fender throughout the design process to ensure the guitars are true-to-spec of the original Telecaster.

All Jimmy Page models will be released throughout 2019 and will be available at local dealers. Fender will reveal the complete model lineup in January 2019. In true tradition, Fender’s Artist Signature Series models honor popular and iconic musicians through product progression and storytelling, creating instruments inspired by the unique specifications of the world’s greatest guitarists and bassists. Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) today officially announced the expansion of its artist signature electric guitar and bass offerings at Summer NAMM 2018 in Nashville, Tenn. Catering to seasoned players across genres, new additions include: the Flea Jazz Bass® Active, Albert Hammond Jr. Stratocaster®, Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster, and Johnny Marr Jaguar® in Lake Placid Blue. These artist-inspired models come off the heels of this month’s introduction of the Player Series, an all-new, accessibly priced line of electric guitars and basses for aspiring players who represent the future of guitar.

Launching in Summer and Fall 2018 is an expansion of Fender’s artist signature line with two new models—Flea Jazz Bass Active (which we previewed at the Fender Sydney dealer event last week), Albert Hammond Jr. Stratocaster. In addition to these two new models, the Johnny Marr Jaguar, originally released in 2012, is being released in a new color—Lake Placid Blue.

“The artist signature electric guitar and bass models we’re unveiling at Summer NAMM are both dynamic and eclectic in style and musical taste—spotlighting top players, from Albert Hammond Jr. and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Johnny Marr,” said Justin Norvell, SVP Fender Products. “Our second artist signature active bass with Flea was designed to complement the Shell Pink Flea Jazz Bass—a reproduction of his beloved recording bass we recreated with him in 2016. This new active model is a complete 180 from the super vintage-style of the other; it’s hyper-modern and ready for the stage. Albert Hammond Jr. helped bring the Stratocaster back to the fore in the early 2000s. He has a keen melodic sense and rhythmic playing style that we wanted to honor—as a member of a huge, stadium-level band in the past 20 years—The Strokes—and as a solo artist, who puts out great records.”

“We’re also adding new a new colour to one of our most successful artist signature models, the Johnny Marr Jaguar. “Johnny’s a fan and collector of guitars in ‘60s era vintage colors and we’re always making him one-offs of his signature model in those unique colorways—like Lake Placid Blue; and when he plays them live, the phone starts to ring with fans asking for them.”

These highly collectible Artist Signature models include:
Flea Jazz Bass Active – $2,999 (Launching October 2018) sports a satin finish with matching headstock. The custom-shaped Jazz Bass body and a hot Fender humbucking pickup with an Aguilar OBP-1 18-volt preamp allows this bass to crank out massive output, perfect for pounding a stadium with the power of funk. The brainchild of Flea and Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Jason Smith, also a Flea/Red Hot Chili Peppers fan and bass player himself—this is the bass Flea plays live in concert.

Albert Hammond Jr. Stratocaster—$1,499 (Launching October 2018) is a 1985 reissue of a ‘72 Strat® with a unique touch. It features replicated Hammond Jr. customized pickups switching: pickup switch position four activates the neck and bridge pickups in tandem, while positions one and three are reversed from the traditional layout. Hammond Jr.’s signature graces the back of the large ‘70s-style headstock, while other ‘70s-inspired features include bullet truss rod nut, 3-bolt “F”-stamped neck plate with period-correct Micro-Tilt™ adjustment and a ‘70s-era logo.

Johnny Marr Jaguar—$3,849 (Launching Summer 2018) is based on Marr’s modified 1965 Jaguar. Originally launched in 2012, the Johnny Marr Jaguar—one of Fender’s more successful signature models—is getting a limited run in a new ‘60s vintage-era color: Lake Placid Blue, which coincides with the release of his new album, Call The Comet. Dual custom-wound Bare Knuckle® Johnny Marr single-coil pickups crank out incisive tone that’s just the thing for slashing through a sonically dense mix. Also featured are a four-position blade pickup, thicker tone and higher output, dual upper-horn slide switches, and a 7.25”-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 vintage-style frets.

Also new to Fender’s electrics lineup in Summer 2018 is the Player Series. Respecting Fender’s heritage while maintaining an innovative spirit, the Player Series blends authentic Fender tone, sound and style with a modern edge that’s versatile enough to handle any style of music. The Player Series is the long-awaited successor to the Fender Standard Series and sets a new benchmark for quality and performance, with upgraded and cool updated features, including: new pickups for legendary vintage tones heard on some of the world’s most influential records; updated body radii for improved comfort and feel; 22-fret necks for extended range; upgraded bridges for improved performance and easier setup; as well as new colors, the classic logo and “F”-stamped neck plate for a more authentic Fender look. These guitars are the best the brand has built in the $1,149—$1,349 price range, with the often imitated, but never duplicated iconic Fender sound, feel, and classic look that’s helped shape popular music for more than 70 years. With 94 SKUs across 21 models and hero colours including Sage Green, Polar White, Tide Pool, Butter Cream, and Sonic Red, artists and players can express themselves in limitless ways.

Gretsch® honoUrs the late Malcolm Young, whose rock-solid rhythm guitar swagger and songwriting provided the unshakeable foundation for monumental rock titans AC/DC, with the G6131-MY Malcolm Young Signature Jet™.

The G6131-MY pays homage to Young’s famously battle-hardened Gretsch Jet. Nicknamed “The Beast,” Malcolm certainly made the instrument his own, not least by removing two of the three pickups, stripping away the finish, and pounding out some of the hardest and most memorable rhythms the world has heard.
“I mean, as soon as you hear that first… chord, you know it’s him,” said his brother Angus Young. “To do this… you have to be a master of rhythm, and that’s exactly what Mal [was].”

This model features the essential hallmarks of one of rock’s most iconic instruments including “DIY” pickup routes with simulated screw holes, chrome switch plugs, Space-Control™ bridge with ebony base and ‘60s-style tailpiece. Open-cavity thunder roars from the thin-skin satin finished chambered mahogany body and is magnified by a high-output TV Jones® Power’Tron™ pickup.

“AC/DC had a sound of their own and this guitar was the foundation of the sweet and nasty tone we all know them for,” said Social Distortion’s Mike Ness.
Malcolm Young’s fiery rock ‘n’ roll spirit lives on through AC/DC’s enduringly timeless music, and it is Gretsch’s great privilege to pay fitting tribute to him with a finely crafted instrument bearing his name.

The G6131-MY Malcolm Young Signature Jet will be available November 2018.
